note: one rainy evening with a filled concert-house awaiting the very late arrival and solo concert by
famed pianist Alicia de la Roca, I - while sitting in the audience - was lightly tapped on the shoulder
by a Grossmont Community Concert Official and asked if I could possibly perform for the audience
until she arrived... and - upon getting up out of my seat, walking the long distance of the hall up the
small stairs alongside the stage-front and onto the stage-proper and finally sitting down at the fine
instrument in front of me about ready to play a colorful Debussy number, she walked in to a glorious
applause! - and I quickly and inconspicuously left the scene...    1960-66

Performed  "Sonatine For Flute and Piano"  by Pierre Boulez (1946), with flutist Anne Diener: in a
private performance at the home of flutist/teacher Julius Baker, for the composer; note: after playing
the entire work for the selected audience of about twenty people, and the applause that followed,
the composer got up from his brocaded-chair and came up to us and asked to sit at the piano...
I - of course - got up, and he sat, and began re-living the composing of the work, making all kinds
of pencil-marks in the score, while he carefully explained every single measure of the entire work...
and, after that, he then asked both of us to play the entire work again!  So, we did... and again
applause... it must have been a good hour at least of his mentoring of his composition to us both!
Finally, after the second-playing, Mrs. Baker announced that everyone could have refreshments...
and, as I was sitting at the far-end of their nice apartment enjoying a nice tart and reflecting upon
what had just happened, I noticed that someone had just come over and sat right next to me on the
sofa, and that person was Mr. Boulez... he and I were talking privately for a good ten minutes - he
asked me about my studies and I told him I too was a composer, and he asked that I send a copy
of one of my scores to his residence in New York City for his observation, and of course I was
pleased to say ok, and he gave me his address... (can't recall what score I hand-delivered)...
